Chapter 27
The pirate captain backed to the front window and looked out at the quiet street. The driver sitting on the carriage nodded as he slept with his hat over his eyes.
Leiras finished tying the French officer to the chair as the pirate captain stepped behind the woman on the sofa. He placed the barrel of his pistol against the back of her head. In the mirror across from them, he saw her eyes widen with fear.
“You say that you remember me,” Marshall contemplated his next moves. “Not your wisest move since you forgot you can’t leave a ruthless man with such limited options. Now, you should expect that I’ll splatter your brains across your boyfriend sitting there. Just another in my long line of killings.”
Marshall scowled as he pulled her shawl from the back of the couch. He stared at her, and her eyes widened with concern. He slid the garment over her shoulder, and the man noticed the prickling flesh of her skin.
“Obviously, you only needed to convince your husband to ignore us or send word to have the bishop arrest us. I find it strange of you to even bother with such an elaborate scheme. Your actions tell me you wanted to watch me cower in fear.”
He smacked her on the head with his palm.
“Bitch, I’m long past such things. You do not know the fear and pain that await in the shadows for me every night.”
The pirate cocked his head and smirked.
“You have the looks and a brain to get ahead in the world. Unfortunately, you’re consumed by an act of petty revenge against someone who cares nothing about your problems.”
He pushed her over onto the sofa and roughly tied her wrists together. The bindings caused her to cry out in pain. The captain ripped off part of her dress, then shoved it into her mouth. He saw the fear in her eyes when he rolled her over. She brought her legs together.
“Don’t worry, Duchess. The pirate Blackbane won’t even bother to rape and kill you. You’re not worth my time. I’m sure Dryden will return home in a few hours to release you and your boyfriend. Enjoy your trivial life among petty nobles, you worthless whore.”
